GSM vs Bluetooth vs Keypad Gate Access: Which Method Should You Choose?

Choosing how people open an automatic gate can have almost as much impact on usability as the gate operator itself. Residential driveways, apartment complexes, commercial premises, storage facilities and shared accessways can all have very different requirements.

Three common options are cellular or “GSM” gate access, Bluetooth access and keypad entry. Each can work well, but they solve different problems. The best choice depends on who needs access, how often permissions change, whether remote control is required and how important auditability and ongoing management are.

What Is GSM Gate Access?

GSM gate access is a commonly used term for gate controllers that communicate through a mobile network. Depending on the controller, authorised users may be able to open a gate by calling a dedicated number, sending a command, using an app or accessing a cloud management platform.

For modern New Zealand installations, however, installers should look beyond the word GSM. Traditional GSM normally refers to older 2G cellular technology, and older gate controllers may also rely on 3G. Those legacy networks should no longer be treated as suitable foundations for a new installation.

One NZ completed its nationwide 2G and 3G shutdown on 23 March 2026. 2degrees completed its 3G shutdown in February 2026, while Spark's 3G network shut down on 31 March 2026. New cellular gate-control equipment should therefore be checked for appropriate 4G/LTE capability and compatibility with the intended New Zealand network rather than being selected simply because it is described as a GSM controller.

Limitations of Cellular Gate Access

  • The site needs reliable coverage from the selected mobile network.
  • A compatible SIM and mobile service may be required.
  • Legacy 2G- or 3G-only equipment can no longer be assumed to operate in New Zealand.
  • Cloud-dependent functions may be unavailable during an internet, platform or cellular outage.

What Is Bluetooth Gate Access?

Bluetooth access allows a smartphone or other authorised Bluetooth device to communicate directly with a gate-access controller over a relatively short distance.

Instead of calling a mobile number or entering a PIN, the user normally approaches the gate and activates access through an app or credential stored on their phone. Depending on the system, operation may be initiated manually or automatically when an authorised device is detected.

Advantages of Bluetooth Gate Access

  • No mobile call required: the phone communicates locally with the controller.
  • Fast for regular users: residents and employees can use a device they already carry.
  • Useful where cellular reception is inconsistent: local Bluetooth communication does not normally rely on mobile coverage for each gate-opening command, although the application may require connectivity for provisioning or other functions.
  • Digital credentials: supported systems can allow permissions to be issued or revoked without distributing physical remotes.
  • Convenient for managed sites: particularly where most authorised users have smartphones.

Limitations of Bluetooth Gate Access

  • The user generally needs to be physically near the gate.
  • Phone settings, Bluetooth permissions and application configuration can affect usability.
  • It may be less convenient for occasional visitors.
  • A flat phone battery can prevent access unless an alternative method is available.
  • Operating distance depends on the hardware, installation environment and surrounding structures.

What Is Keypad Gate Access?

A keypad provides perhaps the most familiar electronic gate-access method. Users enter an authorised PIN at the entrance and the access controller releases the gate if the code is valid.

Keypads range from simple standalone units using one shared code through to networked access-control readers capable of supporting individual PINs, schedules, event records and central administration.

Advantages of Keypad Access

  • No phone required: users only need to know their authorised code.
  • Simple visitor access: suitable for guests, tradespeople and temporary users when properly managed.
  • Easy to understand: very little user training is required.
  • Can work independently of cellular coverage: useful at sites with weak mobile reception.
  • Wide application range: appropriate for residential, commercial and shared-entry environments.

Limitations of Keypad Access

  • Shared PINs can be passed to unauthorised people.
  • Frequently used keys can sometimes reveal clues about a PIN if codes and hardware are poorly managed.
  • Changing a shared code may require notifying every legitimate user.
  • A basic standalone keypad provides much less accountability than a system assigning individual credentials.
  • Users generally need to stop at the keypad rather than operating the gate remotely from inside the property or before reaching the entrance.

Which Is Best for a Residential Driveway Gate?

For a private residential driveway with only a few regular users, Bluetooth can provide very convenient smartphone access without relying on a traditional handheld remote.

A keypad can then be added as an alternative for family members, visitors or contractors who do not have the app.

A modern cellular controller becomes especially useful when the homeowner wants to open the gate remotely, manage users from elsewhere or provide controlled access without distributing permanent remotes.

Which Is Best for Apartments and Shared Residential Gates?

Shared residential entrances create a different challenge because occupants change and a much larger number of credentials may need to be administered.

Individual mobile or Bluetooth credentials are generally easier to revoke than a shared keypad code. If every resident knows the same PIN, changing one tenant can create the awkward choice between leaving the old code active or issuing a new PIN to everybody.

A managed access-control system capable of identifying individual users is therefore preferable where accountability is important.

Which Is Best for Commercial Gates?

Commercial entrances should normally be designed around user management rather than convenience alone.

Businesses may need to distinguish between employees, contractors, delivery drivers and visitors. They may also require scheduled access, event history or integration with the site's wider access-control system.

For these environments, a standalone keypad with one permanent shared PIN is often too limited. A networked cellular, Bluetooth or credential-based solution that assigns individual users provides stronger administration.

The gate should also be considered part of the site's overall security system rather than as an isolated device.

What About Delivery Drivers and Contractors?

Temporary access is one of the strongest arguments for combining methods.

A permanent Bluetooth credential may be appropriate for employees, while contractors could receive a temporary PIN. A property manager may also use remote cellular access to admit an unexpected delivery without permanently adding the driver's phone.

Where supported by the selected access-control platform, time-limited credentials can provide an even better solution. For example, a contractor could be permitted through the gate only between specified hours or during the period of a project.

Should You Use More Than One Access Method?

Often, yes.

There is no requirement for a gate to rely on only one credential type. A well-designed system might use:

  • Bluetooth for residents or employees
  • Individual keypad PINs for contractors
  • Cellular remote release for authorised managers
  • Intercom calling for unknown visitors
  • Vehicle credentials or access-control cards for high-volume users

This provides convenience while reducing dependence on any single access method.

Do Not Forget the Intercom

Keypads, Bluetooth credentials and cellular access work best for people who are already authorised. They do not necessarily solve the problem of an unknown visitor arriving at a locked gate.

For residential complexes, offices and commercial properties, a gate intercom can provide the missing visitor-management layer.

The visitor calls the resident, receptionist or security operator, their identity or purpose can be established, and access can then be released remotely if appropriate.

For larger installations, the intercom, gate controller and access-control system should ideally be designed together.

Security Considerations

No credential method is automatically secure simply because it is electronic.

A gate-access design should consider:

  • Whether every user receives an individual credential
  • How quickly lost or compromised credentials can be cancelled
  • Who has administrator access
  • Whether administrator accounts use appropriate authentication
  • Whether access activity needs to be recorded
  • How temporary visitors are handled
  • How the gate operates during power or communications failures
  • Whether manual emergency release is required
  • How vehicle and pedestrian safety devices interact with the automation system

Think About What Happens During an Outage

A gate-access system should never be designed only around normal operating conditions.

For cellular systems, consider what happens if mobile communications are temporarily unavailable. Bluetooth users may lose access if their phone battery is flat or the application is unavailable. Keypad users may forget their code or discover that a shared PIN has been changed.

For higher-dependency sites, multiple access methods can provide useful resilience.

Backup power for the gate operator, controller and supporting communications equipment may also be appropriate depending on the application.

A Note About Older GSM Gate Controllers in New Zealand

This deserves particular attention in 2026.

Older gate controllers were commonly sold as GSM openers because they communicated using 2G or 3G mobile technology. New Zealand's network environment has now changed substantially.

One NZ has retired both its 2G and 3G networks, while Spark and 2degrees have also retired 3G. Existing mobile-network-dependent gate controllers should therefore be checked rather than assumed to remain compatible.

When specifying replacement equipment, confirm:

  • The cellular technology actually supported by the controller
  • The New Zealand mobile networks it is approved or intended to operate on
  • Required frequency-band compatibility
  • Whether voice, SMS or mobile data is used
  • Whether a cloud service or manufacturer subscription is involved
  • How access continues if the communications service is unavailable

The important specification is no longer simply “GSM”. For a new cellular installation, the communications hardware and network compatibility need to be examined in detail.

So, Which Gate Access Method Should You Choose?

Choose a modern cellular solution when remote opening and remote user management are major priorities and reliable mobile coverage is available.

Choose Bluetooth when regular smartphone users need simple, convenient access while physically approaching the gate.

Choose a keypad when users need a straightforward method that does not depend on carrying a smartphone.

Combine methods when the site has a mixture of regular users, visitors, contractors and remote administrators.

For many professionally installed gates, the strongest design is not GSM versus Bluetooth versus keypad. It is selecting the right combination of credentials and management tools for the way the entrance is actually used.
