IP66 vs IP67 vs IK10: CCTV Weather and Vandal Ratings Explained
Essential Security Supplies
IP66, IP67 and IK10 describe different tests. They help NZ installers choose camera hardware, but they do not promise that any installation is weatherproof, vandal-proof or suitable for a coastal site. Read the exact model's ratings alongside temperature, corrosion, mounting and cable-entry requirements.
Read the two IP digits separately
An IP code describes protection against solid-object ingress and water ingress under specified conditions. In IP66 and IP67, the first digit 6 denotes dust-tight protection. The second digit addresses water testing. It does not describe picture quality, operating temperature or cyber security. Refer to IEC 60529 and the manufacturer's declared test scope instead of using the label waterproof as an unlimited promise.
Distinguish jets from temporary immersion
IP66 addresses powerful water jets under the specified test. IP67 addresses temporary immersion under the specified conditions, commonly described as up to one metre for 30 minutes. These are different water exposures. Do not assume an IP67-only declaration automatically establishes IP66 jet resistance. If both conditions are relevant, seek a model declared for both or written confirmation of the required test coverage.

Treat IK as a separate impact rating
IEC 62262 addresses enclosure protection against external mechanical impacts. IK10 corresponds to a specified 20-joule impact test. It is not a promise that a camera will withstand every deliberate attack, remain aligned or retain an undamaged lens. Mount height, fixing strength and protection of cables remain important. Confirm whether the stated impact protection covers the complete camera assembly or only particular components.
Check the exact camera variant against Uniview IPC2128SB manufacturer documentation and Uniview IPC675LFW manufacturer documentation before specifying these functions.
Check the installation's weak points
A rated camera can still fail through an unsuitable cable gland, unsealed connector or water tracking along a cable. Use the prescribed junction box and seals, form the required drip arrangement and follow torque instructions. Do not drill an extra opening and assume the original protection rating remains valid. Inspect brackets and cable entries after installation, especially where multiple contractors work on the same location.

Assess heat and corrosion independently
Ingress ratings do not establish resistance to salt exposure, UV damage or every cleaning chemical. On exposed NZ sites, review material, finish, mounting hardware and the manufacturer's environmental limits. Consider direct sun, condensation and wind-driven rain as installation conditions. Check the actual operating temperature and any restrictions with IR or heaters active. A higher IP number alone does not settle these questions.
Use ratings within an evidence-led specification
The Essential Security Supplies Uniview IPC2128SB listing describes IP67 protection, while the IPC675LFW listing describes IP66. Those model-specific declarations should remain attached to the exact variants. They do not establish that either has IK10 protection. Put every required rating in the equipment schedule and verify it against current manufacturer information. Record the installed sealing arrangement so that future servicing preserves the intended protection.

Apply the design to the actual project
Build the environmental schedule as separate rows for ingress, impact, temperature and corrosion. Put the manufacturer's declared rating and any installation conditions beside each row. This prevents an IP rating being used as evidence for an unrelated requirement. For an exposed camera, include the junction box and connector assembly in the review. A camera body declaration does not settle the rating of an improvised adapter or damaged cable seal.
During installation, photograph cable entry and sealing before closing the assembly. Keep gasket and gland details in the as-built record, with the prescribed cable diameter and relevant tightening instructions. Reinspect after a cable or camera replacement. An otherwise suitable camera can lose practical protection through servicing that leaves a seal displaced or a connector exposed. Explain the maintenance limits to the client and avoid testing with a pressure washer or other exposure outside the manufacturer's instructions simply to demonstrate that the camera still works.
Commission evidence quality and failure recovery
Test the recorded image at the actual distance where the event matters. Use someone walking through the scene and a representative vehicle where relevant. Review the result on the client workstation, then export a short clip and open it independently. Live viewing, playback and export are different stages, and all three should pass. Include daylight, darkness and a transition in lighting when the objective depends on continuous coverage. Note any zone where the required detail is not achieved.
Disconnect an authorised test camera or network link under a controlled commissioning plan. Confirm that the fault reaches the responsible operator and that normal recording resumes after restoration. Where local recording or automatic retrieval is required, demonstrate that behaviour with the selected firmware and client. Do not assume that an SD-card slot or an interoperability logo proves that missing footage will be recovered. Record the outage interval, expected behaviour and actual result.
Commissioning acceptance checklist
Agree the expected result before testing. Use the installed configuration and retain evidence of each outcome, including a failure that must be corrected. The following checks supplement the exact manufacturer procedures and the approved project design.
| Required check | Record to retain |
|---|---|
| Match the exact camera variant to each required IP and IK declaration. | Expected behaviour, actual result, configuration tested and responsible person. Resolve an unexpected outcome before accepting this requirement. |
| Inspect the actual connector, gland, junction box and fixing arrangement. | Expected behaviour, actual result, configuration tested and responsible person. Resolve an unexpected outcome before accepting this requirement. |
| Confirm temperature and corrosion suitability separately from ingress ratings. | Expected behaviour, actual result, configuration tested and responsible person. Resolve an unexpected outcome before accepting this requirement. |
Repeat affected checks after a material equipment, software or site change. Keep the test record with the as-built schedule so the next maintainer can understand which configuration passed and which assumptions still need review.

Frequently asked questions
Is IP67 always better than IP66?
The tests cover different water exposures. Specify the exposure needed rather than treating the second digit as a complete ranking.
Does IK10 mean vandal-proof?
No. It describes a particular impact test and does not cover every attack or installation weakness.
Can a rated camera use any outdoor connector?
No. The cable-entry assembly must preserve the required protection and follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.
