A modern intercom no longer needs to be an isolated door station connected to one dedicated monitor. With SIP intercom integration, a door station can become part of a much larger communications and security network, allowing calls to be routed to indoor monitors, reception phones, SIP desk phones and other compatible endpoints while also working alongside electronic locking and access control.

What Is SIP in an Intercom System?
SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. It is a communications signalling protocol commonly used for IP telephony and multimedia communications.
In an intercom installation, SIP allows devices such as a door station, indoor monitor and IP telephone to have their own SIP address or extension. A visitor pressing the door station button can therefore generate a SIP call in much the same way that one office telephone calls another extension.
SIP primarily handles the setup, management and termination of the communication session. Audio and video are then carried using compatible media protocols and codecs between the devices.
This distinction is important because SIP is not itself the access control system. SIP manages the communications side, while opening the door can be handled by an intercom relay, access controller, DTMF command, web relay or another supported integration method.
How a SIP Intercom Integration Works
A typical integrated system can contain several separate components:
- SIP video door station
- Local or hosted SIP PBX
- SIP desk phones
- Indoor video intercom monitors
- PoE network switches
- Electronic locks or strikes
- Access control readers or controllers

When a visitor presses the door station button, the door station places a SIP call to a configured extension, device or call group. Depending on the installation, that could ring a dedicated indoor monitor, a reception desk telephone, several phones simultaneously or a sequence of different devices.
Once somebody answers, two-way audio — and video where the receiving device supports it — allows the occupant or staff member to identify the visitor.
The user can then trigger the appropriate door release method.
Connecting a SIP Door Station to Office Phones
One of the biggest advantages of SIP is its ability to use the existing IP telephone environment rather than requiring an entirely separate communications system.
For example, an office could configure a SIP door station with an extension such as 201. When the call button is pressed, the system could send the call to reception extension 101.
A larger deployment could instead use a ring group:
Front door → Reception → Administration → Warehouse
If reception does not answer, the PBX can route the call to another authorised destination. The exact call-flow capability depends on the PBX and endpoints being used, but this is where SIP becomes particularly useful compared with a closed proprietary intercom.
A SIP system can also make it easier to design different call routes for normal business hours, after-hours operation, reception areas or multiple entrances.
Using Indoor Monitors Alongside SIP Phones
SIP does not mean you have to choose between traditional intercom monitors and telephones. A well-designed installation can use both.
A dedicated indoor monitor is often preferable at locations where users want an always-available touchscreen specifically for answering visitors, viewing video and opening doors.
Elsewhere in the building, compatible SIP phones can provide additional answering points.
This can be particularly useful in:

- Warehouses

1. Door Station Relay
For a straightforward installation, the electronic lock can be controlled through a relay associated with the door station.
After speaking with the visitor, the authorised user activates the unlock function and the relay operates for the programmed period.
This can be a practical solution for residential installations and simpler commercial doors.
2. DTMF Door Release
Compatible SIP intercoms can use DTMF tones during a call to trigger an authorised relay.
This allows a compatible SIP telephone or intercom monitor to answer the visitor and send the programmed unlock command without needing a separate physical door-release button beside every telephone.
3. HTTP or Network Relay Control
Compatible devices can also use network commands to operate a remote relay. This can be useful where the relay being controlled is located somewhere else on the IP network.
Network relay control should always be configured with suitable authentication and network security rather than exposing door-control interfaces directly to the public internet.
4. Dedicated Access Control
For commercial installations, multiple doors or sites requiring higher levels of access management, the better design may be to let the intercom handle visitor communications while a dedicated access control system manages credentials, access schedules, event history and secure door operation.
Depending on the equipment being integrated, interfaces such as Wiegand, RS485, relay connections and supported network integration methods can be used between the intercom and access control components.
A Practical SIP Intercom Call Flow
A typical commercial system might operate like this:
- A visitor presses the front door station.
- The door station initiates a SIP call.
- The SIP PBX routes the call to reception.
- Reception answers using a SIP telephone or video monitor.
- Audio and, where supported, video allow the visitor to be verified.
- Reception sends the authorised unlock command.
- The intercom relay, remote relay or access control interface releases the door.
- The door returns to its secured state after the programmed unlock period.
This creates a logical separation between communications and physical access while still allowing the systems to operate together.
Do You Need a SIP PBX?
Not necessarily.
Some IP intercom devices can communicate directly using IP addressing, which can work well for a small installation with only a few devices.
However, a SIP PBX becomes valuable when the project requires more sophisticated call management such as:
- Multiple answering points
- Ring groups
- Call forwarding
- Multiple entrances
- Business-hours and after-hours routing
- Integration with an existing IP phone system
- Centralised extension management
For larger systems, the PBX becomes the communications hub while the access control platform remains responsible for controlled entry.
Don't Forget the Network
A SIP intercom is ultimately a networked security device, so the underlying data network is critical.
Most professional installations should consider quality network switching, sufficient PoE capacity, appropriate IP addressing and sensible network segmentation.
For larger commercial deployments, a managed PoE switch can provide considerably more control over the network than treating the intercom equipment as ordinary consumer devices.
When planning PoE capacity, remember that the network may need to power door stations, indoor monitors, access terminals and other connected security equipment simultaneously.
Security Considerations for SIP Intercom Integration
Connecting communications and physical access makes cybersecurity particularly important.
Good installation practice should include:
- Changing all default administrator credentials
- Keeping intercom and network firmware current
- Using HTTPS for device management where supported
- Using SIP TLS where supported by the complete system
- Using SRTP for encrypted media where supported
- Restricting access to device management interfaces
- Separating security equipment from untrusted network devices where appropriate
- Avoiding unnecessary direct exposure of door stations or relay commands to the internet
- Disabling unused network services and interfaces
- Using secure remote-access methods when off-site administration is required
The security settings must be compatible across the complete SIP environment. Enabling a feature on the door station alone does not guarantee that every PBX, phone or receiving endpoint will support the same configuration.
Example: Small Office SIP Intercom
A relatively simple office could use an Akuvox R20A SIP door station at the entrance, connected by PoE to the building network.
The door station could register to the office SIP phone system and call reception when a visitor arrives. Reception answers the call, confirms the visitor and sends the authorised unlock command.

Example: Larger Commercial Building
A larger project may have several entrances, indoor monitors, reception telephones and separate access-controlled doors.

The result is not one giant system trying to perform every function. Instead, several specialist systems communicate where required while retaining clearly defined responsibilities.
Choosing Equipment for SIP Integration
Before purchasing equipment, establish exactly what the completed system needs to do.
Important questions include:
- Will calls go to an indoor monitor, SIP phone or both?
- Is there already an IP PBX on site?
- Is video required on every answering device?
- How many entrances need to be managed?
- Will the intercom relay control the lock directly?
- Is a separate access control system required?
- Are cards, PINs, NFC, Bluetooth or mobile credentials required?
- Does the project require remote answering?
- Does the existing network have enough PoE capacity?
- Which SIP codecs and security features are supported by every endpoint?
Answering these questions before selecting equipment can prevent compatibility and configuration problems later in the project.
