Outdoor Ethernet cable with exposed twisted pairs, a weatherproof RJ45 connector and junction boxes beside grey exterior conduit.

Outdoor Ethernet Cable Selection: UV, Water Ingress, Routing and Termination

Essential Security Supplies

Outdoor Ethernet cable must match the whole route: sunlight, wet ducts, mechanical exposure, building entry and the final camera or intercom connection. A black jacket or an outdoor label does not prove burial suitability, water blocking or compatibility with a particular gland. For NZ installers, specify each environmental requirement separately and check the exact cable datasheet before selecting the reel.

Quick answer: which outdoor Ethernet cable do you need?

Choose cable rated for every condition along the route. UV-rated cable addresses sunlight exposure; water-blocked construction limits moisture migration; and direct-burial suitability must be explicitly confirmed by the manufacturer, including any required mechanical protection. These claims are not interchangeable. For wet ducts, confirm wet-location suitability as well as water blocking. Conduit alone does not make indoor cable suitable outdoors.

Map the route into distinct exposure zones

Draw the route from switch to endpoint and mark indoor sections, external walls, roof spaces, ducts, underground sections and exposed supports. Record where water can collect, where the cable can be crushed and where it enters the building. One route can require several protection measures even if it uses a single continuous cable.

Check access for replacement as well as installation. A cable cast behind finished cladding or buried without a serviceable route is harder to repair than one in an accessible pathway. Coordinate with the building and electrical trades before work starts. Record any fire-stopping, separation and entry details that need project-specific approval rather than inventing a universal arrangement.

Read UV and water claims separately

UV resistance concerns exposure to sunlight. Water resistance and water blocking concern different forms of moisture exposure or movement. A cable suitable on an external wall may not be suitable in a duct that fills with water. A conduit protects against some mechanical damage but should not be assumed dry throughout its service life.

Manufacturer datasheets can distinguish wet locations, water-blocked construction and direct burial conditions. Belden's 2143A documentation, for example, describes water blocking while also specifying additional mechanical protection for direct burial applications. That example demonstrates why the notes matter; its ratings must not be transferred to another manufacturer's cable because both products are Cat6.

Check jacket temperature limits and chemical exposure as well. A route near a hot roof, vehicle activity or cleaning chemicals may need different protection from a sheltered wall run. Ask for written confirmation where the supplied datasheet does not address the intended environment. An unsupported assumption should be resolved before installation, when changing the route remains practical.

Select the conductor and screen construction

Confirm copper conductor construction, category and connector compatibility. Avoid treating an indoor patch lead as a substitute for a specified external permanent cable. Stranded patch leads and solid installation cables serve different roles and need matching terminations. Check the actual cable diameter against the camera gland and any field-termination plug.

Screening is another independent choice. Some equipment requires screened connections for outdoor installations. Follow the exact equipment instructions and the project's bonding design. A screened jacket does not make an exposed connector waterproof, and an outdoor jacket does not establish surge immunity. Keep those functions separate in the bill of materials and installation checklist.

Protect routing without damaging the cable

Follow minimum bend radius, pulling tension and support instructions. Avoid tight cable ties, sharp metal edges and unsupported spans. Use supports appropriate to UV and the environment, with protection where tools, ladders or vehicles may damage the route. Do not suspend cable between structures unless its construction and support arrangement are suitable for that duty.

Plan a drip loop where appropriate and orient entries as the enclosure manufacturer permits. Keep connection points out of places where water pools. A junction box should have the correct glands, entry sizes and sealing components; drilling an extra hole can change the completed assembly's environmental performance. Check drainage or ventilation arrangements against the enclosure instructions rather than sealing every opening indiscriminately.

On a gate or moving structure, assess repeated movement separately. A standard fixed-installation cable may not tolerate flexing. Protect against pinch points and provide the specified flexible connection system where necessary. Test the movement through its full safe range and document the final route so later mechanical work does not trap or stretch it.

Terminate for the actual camera and enclosure

Check whether the connector passes through the supplied waterproof cap before crimping it. Confirm the gland's supported cable diameter and seal condition. Use the prescribed assembly order and tightening method. A plug pushed into a camera socket with its weather cap left loose can defeat an otherwise suitable cable specification.

Preserve pair twist and conductor arrangement as required by the termination hardware. Inspect for foil or drain wires near contacts and ensure the cable jacket is gripped correctly. Do not apply unapproved sealant inside an RJ45 socket. If a connector has been wet or corroded, assess the cable and equipment as well as replacing the visible plug.

Include distance, PoE and surge assessment

Use the designed link length, including patch leads and service loops. Standard copper Ethernet planning commonly distinguishes a 90 m permanent link from a 100 m channel; verify the selected application and system limits. Outdoor cable does not extend those limits. For longer routes, assess fibre, a properly powered intermediate switch or a supported extender architecture.

Check worst-case endpoint power demand and the switch's per-port and total PoE capabilities. Test the camera with relevant illuminators or other loads enabled where the model permits. Consider surge protection at the locations recommended for the equipment and route. Fibre between buildings can remove a conductive data path, although local power still requires its own protection design.

Use a route-based selection and acceptance checklist

Exposure or task Evidence to request
Sunlight Exact jacket UV or sunlight rating
Wet duct or moisture migration Suitable wet-location and water-blocking specification
Burial or physical impact Manufacturer's permitted installation and protection detail
Building entry Approved entry, indoor cable suitability and fire-stopping detail
Device connection Connector, gland diameter and sealing instructions
Final acceptance Cable tests, functional PoE test and labelled route record

Consider an outdoor gate intercom 65 m from a communications room. The distance may be within the intended channel design, but the route could still include a wet duct, a sun-exposed riser and a moving gate section. Assess each section independently. A compliant length calculation does not resolve those environmental and mechanical conditions.

Leave evidence that supports future maintenance

Record cable model, route, reel markings, termination components and the tests actually performed. Photograph weatherproof assemblies before closing covers and label both ends. Test through the installed switch and endpoint after final sealing, not only with a short indoor lead. Confirm the system returns to normal operation after any approved power-loss test.

Include an inspection plan appropriate to the site, especially after building work, flooding or mechanical damage. Report visible cracking, loose glands and corrosion early. Outdoor cabling is a complete installation system, so a durable result depends on selection, handling, sealing and documentation working together.

Equipment selection and technical references

Use these cable options as a starting point for a project specification. The external cable and cabinet shown are equipment candidates, not a pre-approved complete design. The violet UTP cable illustrates the indoor comparison and is not an outdoor recommendation. Confirm model, accessories, interface support and suitability before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Is black Ethernet cable always outdoor rated?

No. Colour is not a rating. Check the exact product datasheet for sunlight, water, temperature and intended installation conditions.

Does conduit allow indoor cable outdoors?

Do not assume it does. Conduit can admit or collect water, and the complete route still needs suitable cable, entries and mechanical protection.

Can external Cat6 be buried directly?

Only where its exact specification permits the intended burial conditions and protection. External, water-blocked and direct-burial claims describe different requirements.
